IRHC Builds Delivery Framework for Battery Recycling

IRHC sequences work streams first, then skills, across the battery life cycle

South Africa’s battery storage sector is gaining the early outlines of a delivery framework, as risk management company Industrial Risk Hedge Corporation (IRHC) works to build a Circular Battery Economy Platform that connects the country’s renewable energy and battery storage industries with employment, skills development and enterprise opportunities.

The operational logic is straightforward. Rather than treating battery life cycle management as a single recycling endpoint, IRHC is developing pathways that cover collection, diagnostics, testing, classification, second life applications, repurposing, logistics, maintenance, safe pre processing, recycling and material recovery. Each stage represents a potential work stream. The company’s approach is to build those work streams first, then prepare people to fill them.

“We do not want to train people for jobs that may or may not exist. We want to build the value chains and enterprises that create the jobs, and then equip people to participate in them,” said Tebogo Dlamini, Director of New Business Development at IRHC.

That sequencing shapes who the platform is meant to serve. It is designed to link unemployed people, TVET students and graduates, workers requiring reskilling and young entrepreneurs with emerging activity across battery energy storage, battery life cycle management, second life applications, recycling and related technical services. The initiative also aims to support youth enterprises, work integrated learning, technical training and local industrial development.

A central technical component is battery lifecycle risk management. IRHC is examining how risk management and insurance mechanisms could address battery condition, safety, end of life obligations and potential financial liabilities attached to battery energy storage assets. The company argues that the battery life cycle could create economic opportunities well beyond conventional recycling, spanning collection, diagnostics, testing, classification, repurposing, logistics, maintenance, safe pre processing and material recovery.

Execution depends on partners. IRHC is seeking collaborations with renewable energy companies, battery manufacturers, BESS owners, recyclers, insurers, financiers, research institutions, government and education and training organisations. Meanwhile, the company is working with local universities and organisations across the renewable energy, battery, industrial, recycling and skills sectors to develop a technical and research platform, with the objective of linking education and workplace experience to commercial activity.

The longer term ambition is a South African model that could eventually support participation in the wider African battery and renewable energy market, while retaining more technical and economic value within local supply chains. Whether the platform delivers will rest on converting those partnerships into functioning value chains, from collection and diagnostics through to material recovery, and on ensuring the training pathways it builds lead to real participation in the enterprises it helps create.
